Turning Art into Therapy with Art’s the Spark
Thanks to a partnership with the Orlando Museum of Art, Encore at Avalon Park welcomes the Art’s the Spark program. Providing the elderly who face memory, or other neurological issues with the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful experience in which they and their healthy caregivers can partake in a safe environment focused on art and its appreciation.
Involvement
The program allows the elderly to thrive creatively despite any cognitive impairments they may be experiencing. Art’s the Spark provides them with a creative outlet in which they can both look at, and create their own art. Some of the activities for those participating include:
- Interactive discussion with professional educators
- Private Gallery tours to provide optimal enjoyment
- Learning about art history
- Getting involved in an art studio to create their own personal works
- Afterward, they can take their art home with them
Benefits
Art is a wonderful way to express yourself, and for the elderly suffering dementia, it can be therapeutic. There are many ways that art therapy can be beneficial such as:
- Painting and drawing have been shown to help reduce memory loss.
- It is a form of nonverbal communication that allows the freedom to express thoughts
- Art has a calming effect similar to that of listening to music
- When engaged in art therapy, concentration is improved greatly
